Local area
La Peruse is located amidst woods and fields of maize and sunflowers, just ten minutes from the beautiful lakes of the Haute Charentes, with the many opportunities for swimming, - outdoor pools, excellent man-made beaches and safe bathing areas - pedaloes, boating, sailing, windsurfing and high quality fishing (carp, trout, catfish, pike and perch). The Vienne and Charentes rivers offer kayaking and canoeing, with golf, horse riding, a velo rail, an aquatic centre featuring slides and wave pools, roman ruins, markets, bars, restaurants and festivals adding up to a holiday as quiet or as busy as you like. The quiet lanes and tracks around the village are perfect for cycling or walking, together with the many lakes and rivers themselves. There is an impressive Adventure Park (www.aventure-parc.fr) nearby offering a terrific tree climbing, rope and zip-wire circuit that takes three hours to complete.

The village bar is a great place to speak french, meet the villagers and try our local Pineau aperitif, with an English run bar and restaurant in the next village in one direction and a market, bars and restaurants in the other. La Peruse also benefits from its proximity to the cities of Angouleme and Limoges (40 minutes away by car), as it lies close to the Poitou-Charente - Limousin border and a wide range of chateaus, mediaeval riverside cities and other places of interest.

Limoges is a medieval cité d'arts du feu set in the green rolling heart of Limousin, full of shops selling exquisite porcelain and jewel-coloured enamels. It is a lively place with 20,000 students and the city buzzes 24/7. By day explore churches, museums and half-timbered streets lined with elegant boutiques. At night visit the bars and drinking dens before ending the day with a Kir royal in place de la Motte.

Angouleme is a pretty city set amid lush vineyards above the River Charente. The old town with its cobbled streets and ancient districts full of typical French café-lined squares and cool fountains offset by local white stone, is known for its architectural, artistic and historic interest. Guided tours of the old ramparts, river cruises on the Charente, and bike hire for the riverside cycle paths are all recommended.

Cognac is the next town along the River Charente from Angoulême. This beautiful old town is where distilleries galore introduce you to the joys of France's greatest brandy - cognac. The Petite Champagne area around Barbezieux is where the cognac vineyards are located, if you fancy a walk amongst the vines.
